CBN Slashes Monetary Policy Rate to 23% in Major Move to Stimulate Economic Credit
The Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has delivered a significant policy shift by cutting the Monetary Policy Rate (MPR) to 23 percent. This decision, announced following the conclusion of its statutory policy review meeting in Abuja, represents a decisive effort by monetary authorities to stimulate domestic lending, support business expansion, and ease borrowing costs across key productive sectors.
Easing Credit for Private Enterprise
According to the CBN Governor, the committee observed signs of inflation stabilization and recognized the urgent need to unlock credit liquidity for Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs). For several quarters, commercial borrowing rates hovered above 30 percent, placing immense operational strain on manufacturers, agricultural conglomerates, and local service providers. By lowering the benchmark rate, the apex bank aims to signal to commercial banks that private sector credit creation must be revitalized without reigniting foreign exchange volatility.
Financial market participants have responded positively to the announcement, with trading volumes across the Nigerian Exchange (NGX) indicating heightened investor enthusiasm. Analysts project that reduced borrowing costs will enable industrial producers to refinance short-term commercial papers at manageable spreads.
Market Outlook and Consumer Impact
While economic analysts caution that structural bottlenecks—particularly transport logistics and energy tariffs—still pose ongoing pricing pressures, the 23 percent benchmark rate provides a much-needed breathing space for real-sector operators. Over the coming quarters, domestic lenders are expected to recalibrate their prime lending charges downward, giving Nigerian entrepreneurs fresh momentum heading into the fiscal year.
