Federal Government Announces Reopening of First Niger Bridge Following Rehabilitation
Commuters, logistics operators, and commercial transporters across the South-East and South-South corridors have received major logistical relief following the Federal Ministry of Works’ announcement that the First Niger Bridge connecting Asaba, Delta State, to Onitsha, Anambra State, is reopening for full vehicular traffic. The announcement comes after months of intensive structural rehabilitation designed to extend the lifespan of the critical commercial artery.
Comprehensive Engineering Restorations
Minister of Works, Senator David Umahi, confirmed that the extensive engineering works included full expansion joint replacements, bridge deck milling, fresh asphalt resurfacing, and foundational pier reinforcements. Built in 1965, the bridge had suffered chronic wear and tear from sustained heavy axle-load pressure, leading to frequent bottlenecks and safety concerns for long-haul haulage operators.
Engineers utilized modern composite polymers and cathodic protection techniques to fortify the underwater substructures against hydraulic corrosion caused by the River Niger’s seasonal currents. The completion of this project ensures that both the First Niger Bridge and the adjacent Second Niger Bridge will operate at optimal traffic distribution, eliminating gridlocks that historically plagued the Onitsha bridgehead during peak festive periods.
Economic Relief for Inter-State Trade
Traders at the Onitsha Main Market and industrial logistics fleets operating out of Lagos, Benin, and Port Harcourt have welcomed the news. The restoration of free-flowing traffic is projected to shave hours off freight journeys, reduce perishable food transit losses, and lower vehicle maintenance costs for interstate commercial transport operators.
