BREAKING: Former Delta Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan Dies at 71, Days Before Birthday

ASABA, Nigeria — Former Delta State Governor, Dr Emmanuel Eweta Uduaghan, has died at the age of 71, bringing to an end a political career that spanned several decades in public service.

Uduaghan, who governed Delta State from 2007 to 2015, died on the morning of Monday, October 19, 2026, following a brief illness.

His death was confirmed in an official statement issued by his family and signed by Toju Anire Uduaghan, who described the passing of the former governor as a devastating loss to his relatives, Delta State and Nigeria.

Born on October 22, 1954, Uduaghan died just three days before his 72nd birthday.

Announcing his death, the family expressed profound grief over the loss of a man it described as a father, brother, uncle and respected patriarch whose influence extended beyond his immediate household.

“It is with hearts weighed down by immeasurable grief and profound sorrow that we announce the passing to glory of our beloved Father, Brother, Uncle, and Patriarch,” the family said.

The statement acknowledged his contributions to public service and the development of Delta State, noting that his years in government were marked by efforts to improve infrastructure and human development.

A medical doctor by profession, Uduaghan began his political career in Delta State's executive council, serving as Commissioner for Health from 1999 to 2003.

He subsequently became Secretary to the Delta State Government in 2003, a position he occupied until 2007, when he was elected governor on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

During his eight years as governor, Uduaghan pursued policies covering healthcare, education, infrastructure and economic diversification.

His administration was particularly associated with the Delta Beyond Oil initiative, which sought to reduce the state's dependence on petroleum revenue by promoting investment in agriculture, tourism and other sectors.

The former governor also advocated improvements in public healthcare delivery and infrastructure development across the state's communities.

Throughout his political career, Uduaghan remained a prominent figure in Delta State politics and participated in discussions surrounding governance, economic development and political affairs.

His family described him as a source of strength and guidance whose personal relationships and public contributions would be remembered.

The family also expressed gratitude for his life and years of service, offering prayers for the comfort of relatives, friends, political associates and others affected by his death.

Uduaghan's passing marks the loss of one of Delta State's former political leaders, whose administration played a role in shaping the state's development between 2007 and 2015.

As news of his death spreads, attention is expected to turn to his years in public office and the political and developmental legacy he leaves behind.

Details of his funeral arrangements have not yet been announced by the family.
