TotalEnergies and AMNI Finalize $800 Million Investment to Unlock 53-Year Ima Gas Field
Nigeria’s energy landscape achieved a historic milestone as TotalEnergies, in strategic partnership with indigenous operator AMNI International Petroleum Development Company, signed an $800 million Final Investment Decision (FID) to unlock the prolific offshore Ima gas field. The field, which lay largely underdeveloped for 53 years, is positioned to deliver major volumes of clean natural gas into both the domestic pipeline grid and the Nigeria Liquefied Natural Gas (NLNG) trains in Bonny Island.
Unlocking Stranded Offshore Reserves
The Ima gas field project, situated in shallow waters offshore Akwa Ibom and Rivers States, comprises substantial wet gas and condensate reserves. Under the executed commercial frameworks supervised by the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC), the development will deploy state-of-the-art offshore production platforms, pipeline interconnections, and modern carbon-abatement technologies.
Industry stakeholders regard the agreement as a strong vote of investor confidence in the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA) fiscal regime. By partnering with an indigenous exploration firm, the venture also showcases the technical maturation and financial bankability of local independent operators within international energy partnerships.
Power Generation and Industrial Expansion
The primary feedgas generated from the project will feed domestic gas-to-power facilities and petrochemical clusters across the Niger Delta corridor. As Nigeria accelerates its “Decade of Gas” transition policy, the integration of the Ima field is projected to generate thousands of direct technical jobs, expand export revenues, and significantly curb gas flaring across shallow-water concessions.
