AfCFTA Digital Payment System Hits Historic Cross Border Settlement Milestone
The operational integration of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) has achieved a historic turning point as the Pan-African Payment and Settlement System (PAPSS) recorded an unprecedented transaction volume across member central banks and commercial lending institutions. The rapid adoption of the centralized platform represents a major leap toward eliminating intra-African trade friction and drastically reducing the continent's dependency on offshore third-party clearing currencies like the US Dollar and Euro.
Eliminating Dollar Dependency in Continental Commerce
Developed collaboratively by the African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank) and the AfCFTA Secretariat, PAPSS empowers businesses across participating nations to invoice and settle cross-border transactions in their respective local currencies. Under the updated operational frameworks ratified by African trade ministers, clearing timelines have plummeted from traditional three-to-five-day correspondent banking cycles to near-instantaneous real-time execution.
Trade economists estimate that conducting intra-continental transactions directly between local African currencies will save African commercial operators upwards of $5 billion annually in foreign exchange commission charges and conversion markups. Regional chambers of commerce report that agricultural aggregators, light industrial manufacturers, and transport logistics firms are rapidly integrating the digital platform to bypass foreign currency scarcity.
Expanding the Commercial Settlement Frontier
The platform's transaction surge is being accelerated by the mandatory onboarding of tier-one commercial banking conglomerates across West, East, Central, and Southern Africa. With over forty central banks now linked or actively conducting pilot clearing runs, financial analysts project that intra-African commerce will expand exponentially over the coming quarters, laying the foundational payment architecture for a genuinely unified African single market.
