Anfield Chaos: 10 Arrested, Police Officer Injured After Man City Victory

LIVERPOOL, United Kingdom — Ten people have been arrested following disturbances surrounding Manchester City's 3-0 victory over Liverpool at Anfield on Sunday, October 11, with a police officer sustaining a serious facial injury during the post-match security operation.

Merseyside Police confirmed that the arrests were made in connection with several incidents involving supporters during and after the Premier League encounter, which was played amid heightened tensions over Manchester City's financial regulations controversy.

According to the police, five individuals were arrested on suspicion of tragedy chanting, while one man was detained on suspicion of two counts of assaulting a police officer.

Two other individuals were arrested on suspicion of affray, another on suspicion of being drunk and disorderly and assault, while one person was detained for allegedly throwing objects onto the pitch.

The most serious incident occurred at approximately 6:35 p.m. on Anfield Road as supporters were leaving the stadium.

Police said an officer sustained a serious facial injury while assisting in the arrest of a man. The injured officer was taken to hospital for treatment before being discharged to continue recovering at home.

Chief Inspector Leanne Hobin condemned the incidents, particularly the use of offensive chants referencing football-related tragedies.

She stressed that such behaviour caused considerable distress to the families and loved ones of victims and had no place in football.

Hobin warned that individuals engaging in offensive chanting or violent behaviour risked arrest and criminal prosecution, adding that police would continue working closely with football clubs to identify offenders and ensure accountability.

The disturbances came against the backdrop of Manchester City's dispute with the Premier League over alleged financial misconduct.

The club has faced allegations concerning breaches of the league's financial regulations, including matters relating to financial reporting and commercial revenues. Manchester City has consistently denied wrongdoing and challenged adverse findings through the relevant legal processes.

The controversy contributed to an intense atmosphere at Anfield, where sections of the Liverpool support jeered visiting players and displayed banners criticising the Manchester club over the financial case.

Despite the hostility surrounding the fixture, Pep Guardiola's side delivered an impressive second-half performance to secure all three points.

The opening 45 minutes ended goalless, with both teams struggling to convert their opportunities in a tightly contested encounter.

However, the match changed significantly in the 62nd minute when Liverpool midfielder Ryan Gravenberch received a second yellow card and was subsequently sent off, leaving the home side to complete the remainder of the game with 10 players.

Manchester City took advantage of their numerical superiority just three minutes later when Norwegian international Erling Haaland broke the deadlock in the 65th minute.

The visitors doubled their advantage in the 68th minute through Belgian winger Jeremy Doku, whose goal further increased the pressure on an increasingly stretched Liverpool defence.

French midfielder Rayan Cherki completed the scoring in the 78th minute, sealing a commanding 3-0 victory for the visitors.

The result extended Manchester City's winning run in the Premier League to six consecutive matches, maintaining their strong start to the campaign.

For Liverpool, the defeat represented a disappointing afternoon at Anfield, with the dismissal of Gravenberch proving a significant turning point in a match that had remained competitive before the red card.

However, the footballing outcome was overshadowed by the incidents involving supporters, raising renewed concerns about crowd behaviour and the safety of police officers and other personnel working at major sporting events.

Tragedy chanting has increasingly attracted attention from football authorities and law enforcement agencies in England because of its impact on families affected by historic football disasters.

The practice involves offensive references to fatal incidents associated with football clubs and their supporters, often intended to provoke rival fans.

Football authorities have repeatedly condemned such conduct, emphasising that rivalries should not involve the exploitation of loss of life or personal suffering.

Merseyside Police said investigations into the incidents were continuing and reiterated its commitment to working with football clubs and relevant authorities to prevent violence and offensive behaviour at matches.

The force also encouraged individuals with information or relevant footage to assist officers with their enquiries.

While Manchester City left Anfield celebrating a convincing victory, the events surrounding the fixture have highlighted the continuing challenge of maintaining safety, respect and responsible supporter conduct in English football.
