Beyond Football: Super Eagles Star Taiwo Awoniyi Earns Third Qualification, Reveals Promise to Father
Nigeria and Coventry City striker Taiwo Awoniyi has attributed his continued pursuit of academic qualifications to a promise he made to his father, Solomon, long before his football career took him to the highest levels of the game.
The 29-year-old Super Eagles forward recently graduated from the Professional Footballers' Association (PFA) Business School, earning a postgraduate diploma in Global Football Sport Directorship with merit.
The achievement marks his third academic qualification, adding to his previous studies in business management and another diploma.
Speaking to BBC Sport following the graduation ceremony at Arsenal's Emirates Stadium, Awoniyi explained that his father's insistence on education had remained a guiding principle throughout his professional career.
Describing himself as a quiet dreamer, the Nigerian international said he had always recognised the importance of acquiring knowledge beyond the football pitch.
He explained that his father initially had reservations about his pursuit of professional football, making education an important condition of his sporting ambitions.
For Awoniyi, completing another qualification represents more than academic success. It also reflects his determination to honour that family commitment while preparing for opportunities beyond his playing career.
Born in Ilorin, Kwara State, Awoniyi began his football journey at Imperial Soccer Academy before joining Liverpool in 2015. He subsequently developed his career in Germany, establishing himself at Union Berlin before moving to Nottingham Forest.
The striker joined Coventry City during the 2026 summer transfer window, continuing his career in English football while maintaining his commitment to personal development.
His determination to pursue education has also been shaped by the unpredictable nature of professional sport.
In May 2025, Awoniyi suffered a life-threatening injury after colliding with a goalpost during Nottingham Forest's Premier League encounter with Leicester City.
The collision resulted in a ruptured intestine, requiring emergency medical intervention. He was subsequently placed in a medically induced coma while receiving treatment.
Reflecting on the challenges of professional football, Awoniyi acknowledged that setbacks and injuries had reinforced his belief in developing skills and interests outside the sport.
He also challenged the perception that professional footballers have insufficient time to pursue academic interests.
According to the striker, although training schedules and competitive fixtures can be demanding, players often have opportunities outside their football commitments to engage in structured learning.
He maintained that successfully combining education with a professional sporting career largely depends on individual commitment, discipline and the willingness to make personal sacrifices.
Awoniyi further emphasised that football, despite its importance to players, should not define every aspect of their lives.
The Nigerian international believes professional athletes should be recognised as individuals with wider interests, ambitions and responsibilities beyond their sporting careers.
His latest academic milestone comes as football organisations increasingly encourage players to develop the skills required for careers after retirement.
The PFA Business School offers programmes designed to help professional footballers and other industry participants develop expertise in leadership, administration and the commercial aspects of the game.
Its courses are structured to accommodate football schedules, allowing participants to attend seminars and complete academic assignments alongside training and competitive fixtures.
Awoniyi graduated as part of the institution's 2026 cohort, which also included Everton midfielder Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall and former Chelsea captain César Azpilicueta.
While the Nigerian forward remains committed to his playing career, his academic achievements underline his interest in preparing for future opportunities within and beyond football.
For Awoniyi, the journey that began with a promise to his father has developed into a continuing commitment to education, demonstrating that professional sporting ambitions and academic advancement can coexist.
