Mbappé Makes Champions League History, Shatters Messi’s Record

ROME, Italy — French international Kylian Mbappé has written his name into the UEFA Champions League history books after becoming the youngest player to make 100 appearances in Europe's elite club competition.

The Real Madrid forward achieved the milestone on Wednesday, October 14, 2026, during his side's dramatic 4-3 victory over Italian club AS Roma at the Stadio Olimpico.

At 27 years and 298 days, Mbappé surpassed the previous record held by eight-time Ballon d'Or winner Lionel Messi, who reached the landmark aged 28 years and 84 days while representing Barcelona against Roma on September 16, 2015.

The French captain also marked the historic occasion with a goal, scoring Real Madrid's first-half equaliser in a fiercely contested encounter that eventually produced seven goals.

Despite falling 3-1 behind, the Spanish giants staged an extraordinary late comeback, with Carlos Espí, Endrick and Antonio Rüdiger scoring to secure all three points for the visitors.

The victory maintained Madrid's perfect start to their European campaign and provided a memorable backdrop to Mbappé's latest individual achievement.

According to UEFA, the former Paris Saint-Germain forward has become the 57th player to make at least 100 appearances in the Champions League and only the fifth French footballer to reach the milestone.

Mbappé's achievement further strengthens his standing among the competition's most prominent players, having established himself as one of Europe's leading goalscorers since making his Champions League debut with AS Monaco as a teenager in September 2016.

His emergence on the European stage came during Monaco's remarkable 2016/17 Champions League campaign, when the French side reached the semi-finals before losing to Juventus.

Following his move to Paris Saint-Germain in 2017, Mbappé developed into one of Europe's most prolific attackers, helping the French club reach the Champions League final in 2020.

He later joined Real Madrid, continuing his pursuit of major European honours while adding to his impressive collection of individual records.

During the 2025/26 Champions League campaign, Mbappé finished as the competition's leading goalscorer with 15 goals, including a remarkable hat-trick against Olympiacos scored in just six minutes and 42 seconds.

His latest milestone places him ahead of several celebrated names in European football history, including Messi, Raúl González, Iker Casillas, Thomas Müller and Cristiano Ronaldo, in the record for the youngest player to reach 100 appearances.

Mbappé is also the second footballer to reach the century mark in the current Champions League season, following Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois, who became the first Belgian player to achieve the feat during the opening round of matches.

Four other players, Bernardo Silva, Joshua Kimmich, Jan Oblak and Nicolás Otamendi, reached 100 appearances during the 2025/26 campaign.

Former Real Madrid captain Raúl González was the first player to record 100 Champions League appearances, achieving the landmark on February 21, 2006, during a 1-0 home defeat to Arsenal.

For Mbappé, the latest accomplishment represents another significant chapter in a career defined by goalscoring achievements, international recognition and sustained performances at the highest level.

Having already established himself among the competition's most prolific forwards, the French captain now holds a landmark appearance record previously associated with one of football's greatest players.
